Project Playhouse

English Lesson Plan

Overview:Kent State’s ongoing support for Hurricane Katrina victims in Biloxi, Miss., isn’t child’s play….but the latest way to raise money for it is. Interior design students started the project, but now others, from architecture students to university service organizations, are helping out.

Suggested time allotment: Approx. half an hour

Objectives

Students will:

1. Read or view the video/podcast or read the article on the Web site below about Project Playhouse.
2. Create an ad for the playhouses. Include a headline and some copy (words) plus visuals that encourage people to bid on the playhouses.

Standards: National Council of Teachers of English and International Reading Association Standards for English Language Arts:

1. Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts: to build an understanding of texts, of themselves and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.
8. Students use a variety of technological and informational resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.
12. Students use spoken, written and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion and the exchange of information).
