Prom king...or not?

English Lesson Plan

Overview: A high school in Fresno, Calif., may have a female Prom King...complete with tuxedo just like the six others trying for the title. Her name is Cinthia Covarrubias, and she considers herself transgender, according to a CNN.com story.

Suggested time allotment: Writing prompt with in-class assignment of 20 minutes or less.

Objectives

Students will:
1. Read the article and react. Should the school allow this? Encourage this? How should students react? How would you react if this took place at your school?

Standards: National Council of Teachers of English and International Reading Association Standards for English Language Arts:
7. Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions and by posing problems.
